"The Impossible Fortune" is the fifth instalment in Richard Osman's highly popular Thursday Murder Club series, reuniting the four amateur sleuths from the Coopers Chase retirement village for another high-stakes investigation.
The story finds the four friends—Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim—dealing with their own personal challenges. Joyce is fully preoccupied with planning her daughter Joanna’s wedding, a joyous occasion that takes centre stage at the beginning of the book. Meanwhile, Elizabeth is quietly navigating a period of grief, Ron is dealing with complicated family issues, and Ibrahim continues his work providing therapy to a familiar figure from their past.
The quiet, domestic life of the club is shattered at the wedding reception when Elizabeth is approached by an anxious guest, Nick Silver, who fears for his life. Nick is soon revealed to be a man in possession of a secret: he and his business partner hold the key to an "uncrackable code" that unlocks a fortune worth killing for, rumoured to be a substantial amount of cryptocurrency.
When Nick suddenly vanishes without a trace, the Thursday Murder Club is thrown back into action. They must untangle a complicated plot involving kidnapping, a very specific murder, and a ruthless villain who will stop at nothing to gain access to the impossible fortune locked behind the code.
The gang, aided by their trusted network of police and former criminal associates, dive into their most complex puzzle yet. Joyce’s daughter, Joanna, also joins the fray, helping the four friends investigate Nick’s cagey business partner and the true value of the hidden code.
The novel blends the trademark warmth, humour, and keen observations on ageing and friendship with a thrilling and intricate mystery that pushes the stakes higher than ever before. Can the club solve the puzzle, find the missing man, and expose a killer before the villain gets away with it all?
